Fuse Box Upgrade.... Is it time to upgrade your fuse box?

The consumer unit, more commonly known as the fusebox, is the main distribution point for the electrics in your property. They contain all the safety devices to make your electrical installation safe.

If you live in a old house or one that hasn’t been electrically updated in a long time you may have a BS3036 rewireable fuse board.

Older fuse carriers are very dangerous when operating under fault conditions as the fuse element sometimes splashes as it melts causing hot copper to spray around nearby objects, obviously hot copper falling on certain materials can cause fire.

If you have an old fuse board with rewireable fuses it is generally recommended that these should be upgraded as the newer ones are safer and much more convenient. They are also much easier to reset in the event of an overload.

The added protection that modern units provide is quicker response times by the overload protective device (MCB) and protection against earth leakage (RCD).

RCD's trip in the event of an earth fault which can either be due to damage to cables, accessories or appliances or someone touching a live part.
